Hometown Girl
When the world catches up with an iconoclast it can be bittersweet. You wouldn’t go see David Bowie expecting Aladdin Sane; similarly, we can’t go see
Margaret Cho expecting
Notorious C.H.O. because these days, bits on fag-haggery feel dated no matter how inside. Cho, herself, reminds us that Fresh Off the Boat aired 20 years after her own failed sitcom about an Asian immigrant family. But it was that failure — and Cho’s fierce recovery — that gave us
I’m the One That I Want, which was the Cho everyone wanted. The unrepentant outcast, the quintessential San Francisco girl — gross, hilarious, blunt, sad, sexy, and seriously bi. Cho is still all of those things and a big box of toys (pun intended) but these days the issues that concern her are less personal and more global – violence against women earned the new show’s moniker: psyCHO — and, while she knows how to make these topics subjective, she doesn’t exactly know how to make them funny. So bring on the dick jokes, fat pussy, and some Craigslist peccadillos, and remember that no one is better at working this crowd.
