Among the other groups involved in the merger are: directors for Stanford Health Services, who have already approved the combination; a committee, created by the UCSF and Stanford presidents, to choose some directors to run the new, merged USHC; the UCSF Foundation, the main fund-raising arm for the S.F. medical school, which has lobbied for the merger; and the nonprofit Bay Area Life Science Association, which was created to help design the future UCSF campus at Mission Bay, which will be surrounded by a biotech research park and which may or may not be intimately connected to the merger, depending upon whom you believe.
The chart on these two pages illustrates some of the many connections among the public and private figures who have influenced what is almost certainly the largest privatization of a governmental entity in California history. The connections do not explain the push to create USHC; rather, they describe the political context in which a massive, unprecedented, and fiscally questionable merger was proposed and publicized and pushed to the edge of reality.
