Theater nerds will know what we mean when we say that In My Corner is a manly-man version of A Chorus Line. It's as if the Al, Paul, and Mike characters from that beautiful production combined their stories into a one-man show. Writer and star Joe Orrach's tap dancing, boxing, and Mama-impersonating help bring his autobiographical story to life, while minimal but ingenious set pieces get a beating from his enthusiastic performance. A New Yorker with a Sicilian/Puerto Rican background, Orrach's stint as an Air Force boxer segues into a professional dancing career, and his philosophical attitude allows the two worlds to blend and bleed into bildungsroman. You can never go home again, but is it because home changes, or because you change? Orrach, unlike most folks, ponders this and other mysteries in between athletic jump-rope displays.
