The Lift
Your feet will get a workout when they step into the Lift on Friday, July 22, at Beatbox. 10 p.m., $5; www.beatboxsf.com.
San Francisco underground loft dance parties have been rare lately because of zealous policing, risk of equipment confiscation, and the financial risk involved. That's not the case in New York City, where an elevated event called the Lift has sprouted monthly offshoots in L.A. and now San Francisco (minus the upstairs location). KCRW DJ Jeremy Sole, from L.A.'s Afrofunke party, and his New York partner Wiseacre are opening the doors to the Lift S.F., inviting Philly vet King Britt and U.K. artist Natural Self to dish out jazzy, eclectic grooves. Britt DJed for Digable Planets, founded pioneering neo-soul ensemble Sylk 130, and has remixed Curtis Mayfield, Macy Gray, and dozens more. Tru Thoughts label producer Nathaniel Pearn's Natural Self project trades in cracking funky drum concoctions that breakdancers and disco dancers love.
