The Helio Sequence: Show Preview

Wednesday, Oct 3 2012

On Negotiations, the fifth album by Portland, Ore.-based The Helio Sequence, singer-guitarist Brandon Summers and drummer-keyboardist Benjamin Weikel return as a lean, slightly grittier indie-pop machine. In 2009, the band's studio was flooded following unusually heavy rains, spurring the guys to rededicate a new space. In their new, reverberant warehouse, the duo eschewed the glossy digital gear of past albums in favor of hazy analog washes and tube saturation. The resulting songs are at times bleary and insular, folky and intimate, yet Summers and Weikel manage to take their measured tunes into anthemic territory with swelling synth melodies and chiming guitar cascades.
