The Devil Makes Three
Great American Music Hall
Both the sinners and the saved are welcome at the Devil Makes Three party on Saturday, May 2, at 9 p.m., $16; 885-0750, www.gamh.com.
The Devil Makes Three draws on rural blues, folk, and bluegrass in equal measures with rock 'n' roll. While many of the Santa Cruz trio's songs display a punk attitude and play up the virtues of gambling, drinking, and carousing, its take on excess isn't exactly over the top. Back-porch vocals, acoustic guitars, upright bass, and a touch of fiddle and banjo make for a down-home sound that's infectious for its lack of pretense. And yet on the band's new album, Do Wrong Right, there's plenty of preacher-speak on performing your dirty deeds with distinction.
