Hear This: The Coup
Any time I get the opportunity to plug a
Coup show, I take it. That's because there aren't enough Coups in hip-hop these days. Boots Riley has been at the agit-hop game for more than two decades, but his performances with the Coup are anything but rote. Quite the opposite:
Shadowbox, the group's recent multimedia extravaganza at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts — with graffiti art, props, backdrops, indie rock, a string quartet, and more — was phenomenal. At the New Parish in Oakland, Riley and company will be back to just being the Coup, and bringing along some pretty hot opening acts:
