Last year 60 billion LEGO pieces were produced, but The LEGO® Movie still triggered a retail shortage. This year's documentary Beyond the Brick tries to get to the bottom of the toy's uncanny relevance with some hard science and fine art. According to mathematician Søren Eilers, six eight-studded bricks can be combined in 915,103,765 ways. By now, it would seem artist Nathan Sawaya has tried most of them.
