That’s ‘Rude

Wednesday, May 11 2011
Gertrude Stein is often quoted, but usually, people repeat her most sensible words. It’s a shame, and it goes against her whole deal. Hardly anyone ever looks off into the middle distance on a sunny day and intones, “The care with which there is incredible justice and likeness, all this makes a magnificent asparagus, and also a fountain.” How can we fix this? A start is Words & Voices: Stein & Co., a poetry reading by Matthew Zapruder, Gillian Conoley, and Paul Hoover. They plan to read Stein’s work as well as their own, and we trust their selections from her oeuvre to be perfectly nonsensical. The poet best known for using words the way a cubist painter uses reality deserves to be celebrated surrealistically. “A sight a whole sight and a little groan grinding makes a trimming such a sweet singing trimming and a red thing not a round thing but a white thing, a red thing and a white thing.”

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
