Get in Shape for a Good Cause

MON 5/12

Everybody likes a team player, but not all of us know how to play nice with others. That's where Team in Training comes in. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's endurance training program helps folks of all ages and abilities prepare for marathons, triathlons, and 100-mile bike rides by planning training events and exercise schedules and providing coaching tips. In return, participants raise money for blood-related cancer research. Talk with trainers and past participants from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 480 Sutter. Call 625-1100 or visit -- Lisa Hom

Up and Away
Extreme kiting at Crissy Field

SAT-SUN 5/10-11

Mankind has long been fascinated with flying. And based on the aerodynamic qualities of kiteboarding (also known as kitesurfing or kiting), it looks like we're getting closer to it every day. The sport allows riders to fly 30 feet in the air or sail across the water at 25 miles an hour, and such a rush can get obsessive. "Most riders stay geared up 24 hours a day with wireless communication devices that allow us to chase the wind," says avid participant Steve Gibson.

If you're not already turned on to the activity, the Interactive Kite Tour is the perfect introduction. Local riders host a free Airshow Invitational Kiting/Yachting Cruise, where spectators can watch adrenaline addicts perform acrobatic moves like the "Dead Man" under the Golden Gate Bridge. After the judged competition, riders attempt to convert more folks with demonstrations, seminars, and a barbecue. Fly high on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at Crissy Field, Halleck & Mason, S.F. Visit -- Lisa Hom

Hot Wheels

SAT 5/10

What better to do on a weekend afternoon than watch the metal-flake, whitewalls, and fins roll by? Bask in the chrome glow of an expected 100 or so sweet rides and tricked-out motorcycles at "A Frisco Get-Together." All slick two- and four-wheeled friends are welcome -- if you think you're cool enough, that is. Is your paint job perfect? Engine souped? Vehicle vintage 1965 or earlier? If not, just hang out drinkin' and checking out that hot-rod Lincoln. Starting at 2 p.m. on Wisconsin Street in front of everyone's favorite punk rock pingpong bar, the show also includes rock band the Royal Deuces. It's all put on by the mighty Laf A Lots Car Club. Cruise on over, nice and slow, to Thee Parkside Bar & Grill, 1600 17th St. (at Wisconsin), S.F. Admission is free; call 503-0393 or visit -- Hiya Swanhuyser

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
