Take a Load Off, S.F.

In our big Summer Movie Preview back in May, we observed that the music documentary Ain't In It for My Health: A Film About Levon Helm had already played New York and was about to begin runs in Boulder, Colo., and Concord, N.H., but it wasn't scheduled to open in San Francisco, so we predicted that our best chance to see it here would be as part of a film festival. We were mostly right: The picture is now scheduled to play tonight only at the Roxie, arguably the heart of San Francisco's film festival culture, as part of the Roxie's ongoing POP/ROX series, a co-presentation with Noise Pop. There are two screenings, meaning that many more San Franciscans can see this doc about the grizzled former drummer and singer for The Band — it's Levon Helm's voice that rolls into Nazareth feelin' 'bout half past dead in "The Weight" — as he works on his first solo album in 25 years, having slowly regained his voice after his vocal cords were wrecked during a battle with throat cancer. In a more perfect world, Ain't In It For My Health would be here for at least a week, but we're grateful the Roxie's playing it at all.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
