Switching It Up

Wednesday, Mar 21 2012
There are two kinds of music: classical, or "art music," and pop music. And they're fundamentally different and separate. Right? Wrong. For five years, San Francisco's Switchboard Festival has been blurring the lines between the supposedly distinct worlds of art and pop by featuring artists whose work draws inspiration from both. This year's all-day event features Beep — the delightfully playful avant-jazz trio fronted by Nate Brenner, who also plays in the breakout indie act tUnE-yArDs — as well as numerous Bay Area artists whose music is too creative to be neatly categorized. Catch Beep, Cornelius Boots & Friends, Dan Cantrell, Dominique Leone, Danny Holt, Faun Fables, Ramon and Jessica, and many more at the fifth annual Switchboard Festival on Sunday, April 1, at the Brava Theater Center.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
