It's rare that a modern instrumental guitarist possesses a sound all his own, but James Blackshaw is a true innovator. The London native launched a series of home recordings that caught the ears of critics and the public, leading to a deal with respected indie label Tompkins Square, which reissued his discography last year along with the iridescent Litany of Echoes. Blackshaw weaves kaleidoscopic tapestries on an acoustic 12-string. His fleet-fingered right-hand technique multilayers notes and overtones until a dreamy, magical music emerges.

    Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage.
