The author of the nonfiction anthology Not for Rent: Conversations with Creative Activists in the U.K. turned her knowledge of squatting into her debut novel, The Sunshine Crust Baking Factory. Photographer Ash Thayer also shares pix from her book documenting the 1990s NYC Lower East Side squatter scene, Kill City.

The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage.
