With one of the largest Chinese populations outside of China itself, it's no wonder that when it comes to the Lunar New Year, San Francisco goes big. And really, you haven't seen a firework until you've seen the red-and-gold monstrosities going off in the steep, crowded streets of Chinatown. In honor of the holiday, the Chinese Cultural Center's annual Spring Festival brings together traditional dance, opera, and music. The talent includes local dancers of all ages and the lovely Eva Tam, a singer in the Southern Cantonese style who is widely known for forgoing the traditional women's singing roles in lieu of the more substantial male roles. The Spring Festival coincides with the Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade, which takes place just outside of the CCC's Chinatown location. So grab some dim sum, tea, or a drink at the Li Po Lounge and make a day of it. The Year of the Ram only rolls around once every 12 years, after all.
The Chinese Cultural Center presents its Spring Festival at 10:45 a.m. at 750 Kearny St., S.F. $10-$30; 896-1822 or c-c-c.org.
