Spectrum
Great American Music Hall
Spectrum appears in support of its new EP, War Sucks, which features two new Kember originals alongside covers of Laurie Anderson and the Red Krayola, on Thursday, May 7, at 8 p.m., $17-$20; 885-0750, www.gamh.com.
Jason Pierce's band, Spiritualized, is the highest-profile act to emerge from the ashes of Spacemen 3. But pay close attention to fellow Spaceman Pete Kember — aka Sonic Boom — if the massively influential drone-rockers' catalog has left you wanting more. Kember's group, Spectrum, runs with the formula of Spacemen 3's Playing with Fire — skeletal blues with few chords and loads of cosmic glaze. And as with Spacemen 3, Spectrum's textural alchemy has proven equally suited for cover songs as it is for originals — elegiac versions of Daniel Johnston and Beat Happening tunes place among Kember's finest moments.
