Sounds of suspense

Wednesday, Apr 30 2014

At first glance, it might be easy to wonder why the Circus Bella All-Star Band is headlining a show in one of the city's best music venues. After all, doesn't a circus band just play the background music? Well, to put it mildly, no, not at all. The band covers the pre-show, intermission, and a wide range of acts. The circus might hire a breakdancing juggler, a frisbee-catching dog, or an acrobat who stands on her hands to shoot a bow and arrow with her feet — no matter which, the band must be ready with an appropriate tune. That takes some serious chops. So it's a fair bet that any circus band can rock the house, and a sure thing when it's led by someone like multi-instrumentalist Rob Reich. Reich has been Circus Bella's composer for years, and plays regularly as a member of Tin Hat, Gaucho, and The Nice Guy Trio. And since the show is a fundraiser for Circus Bella's 2014 season, expect Reich to bring a few clowns, acrobats, and jugglers along to jam on stage.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
