So Eccentric

Wednesday, Apr 30 2014

Smuin Ballet rounds off its 20th anniversary season with its "XXcentric Spring Dance Series," making its first stop on its tour of the Bay Area at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts before heading to theaters in Walnut Creek, Mountain View, and Carmel. The company, known for presenting vivid numbers that make classical dance easy on the eyes, offers two premieres. Val Caniparoli's Tutto Eccetto il Lavandino (everything but the kitchen sink) marries the sought-after choreographer's developed instinct for formal structure to the music of Antonio Vivaldi. Smuin choreographer-in-residence Amy Seiwert presents But now I must rest to the sultry beats of the Cape Verdian "barefoot diva" Cesaria Evora. The late Michael Smuin's work lives on in Dancin' with Gershwin, which brings the classic jazzy tunes to life with recordings by icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Sting, and Peter Gabriel.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
