Six-Pack, Two Wheels

It’s no wonder the people behind a daylong tribute to bicycles in San Francisco would discourage participants from bringing beer. But the reason might surprise you: The organizers are supplying the cerveza. (Not to mention they don’t want to turn into Bay to Breakers II and risk getting shut down because of a bunch of sloppy drunks.) They also encourage people who come to the Tour de Fat to be in costume, to trick out their rides, and to ride those rides rather than hauling them in by car or truck. (A note to those who cart around $3,000 road bikes on top of Lexus or Mercedes SUVs: You’re missing the point.) But they will make an exception for one person who wants to trade a gas-powered vehicle for a bicycle. That person will arrive in a polluting four-wheeler but leave on a new commuter bike. Sound gimmicky? Maybe. But the proceeds from the event all go toward bicycle and environmental causes. We find that pretty hard to argue with. Plus, there are fire-jumping bike acts, a parade (remember the costumes?), and live music. And did we mention beer?

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
