Six Organs of Admittance: Show Preview

Wednesday, Sep 19 2012

Psychedelic-folk soothsayer Ben Chasny (the main man behind Six Organs of Admittance) frequently lets his guitar instrumentals soar into the upper reaches of nowhere, so it's apropos that his new record is called Ascent. The formerly S.F.-based fingerpicker's latest is two experiences in one: an onslaught of agitated, distortion-flambéd electric waves, and a soothing, acoustic-born reflecting pool. On "One Thousand Birds," Chasny weighs his eerie vocals down under effects; a song later on "Your Ghost," he's a soft-hearted, naked-voiced crooner who just asks for your affection. Ascent is music for the cosmos — both a perfect backdrop to witnessing the majestic sprawl of outer space, and the soundtrack to the slow dances and long drives you'd imagine while missing Earth.
