Karen Elson
Karen Elson performs on Tuesday, June 8, at Café du Nord. 9:30 p.m., $15; www.cafedunord.com.
Depending on your point of view, Karen Elson is either starting with an unfair advantage or has two strikes against her. The British singer is a fashion model who has graced covers of Vogue, Elle, and Marie Claire, and she's married to Jack White. But Elson's full-length debut, the White-produced The Ghost Who Walks, isn't another fashion-plate caprice à la Naomi Campbell's atrocious 1995 flop, Babywoman. With a sandpaper rasp reminiscent of Nancy Sinatra, Elson assays oddball Americana originals embellished with old-timey touches like accordion and fiddle. She isn't quite on par with Polly Jean Harvey yet, but on tunes like "100 Years from Now," she comes close enough to bear further consideration — regardless of her day job.
