Flying Lotus
Hear Ellison meld groove and theory on Friday, Sept. 24, at Mezzanine. 9 p.m., $22.50; www.mezzaninesf.com.
Los Angeles' Flying Lotus (also known as Steven Ellison, or FlyLo) reckons that the epic, playful electronics of his sophomore album, Cosmogramma — which features a guest turn from Radiohead's Thom Yorke on "... and the World Laughs with You" — constitute a "space opera." While that may be somewhat fitting, the album contains none of the pomposity that "opera" implies. As the great-nephew of the late experimental musician Alice Coltrane (wife of John), he has the lineage of orbital jazz wired into his brain. And FlyLo's music doesn't exist only in the outer atmosphere -- he also knows how to make folks get down.
