Etang Inyang and Tammy Johnson have made it their mission to teach women and girls to appreciate their bodies, no matter the size or shape, with their belly dancing company Raks Africa. On July 13, they present Hotter than July, a steamy evening of sinuous and spirited moves to benefit their Girls Raks dance program for teen girls, as well as their cultural exchange program with the Middle East. Equipped with video letters by Oakland women, Inyang and Johnson will tour Egypt with Nazra for Feminist Studies, meeting women's rights activists and shooting video responses to bring back to girls in Oakland. Inyang and Johnson aim to create work that shows women standing up against violence and finding solidarity in community. They are joined onstage by other Bay Area belly dancers, including Ahava, OREET, Monica Berini, Shabnam Dance Company, Raks Al Khalil, and Jennifer Cooper, with music provided by the Women's Cancer Resource Center.
