Shack Up!

Wednesday, Oct 17 2012
Long before shots were fired during Halloween in the Castro, the perils of idiocy, belligerence, and a general lack of style had driven us far, far away. Why immerse ourselves in a crowd of oversized foam hats and Wal-Mart nurses when we could attend Trannyshack, the natural home of glamour, gore, and satire? Beyond boasting the greatest costume contest in the city — dressing up as Heklina does not guarantee a win, but it’s still funny — Trannyshack: Halloween promises some out-of-town meat in the form of Pittsburgh’s Alaska Thunderfuck, as well as some of our favorite homegrown performers, in-cluding Elijah Minnelli, former Miss Trannyshack Raya Light, Pan-Asian drag dance troupe The Rice Rockettes, and the lus-cious Dulce De Leche. Last year, Exhibit Q did an unforgettable group tribute to the original Star Trek (a blue-green femme fa-tale lip-synched all the instrumentals from the B52s’ “Planet Claire” while Kirk danced with disposable Starfleet security officers). We can’t wait to see what they have tucked away for 2012. You may also expect some treats from our hosts, Peaches Christ and Heklina, and if they are not to your liking, toilet paper has a long-standing role in America’s holiday tra-dition. DJ MC2 gets the mischief started.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
