It's easy for conversations about jazz to focus only on big names that even the casual listener can have an opinion about — and John Coltrane, in particular, cast a long, inimitable shadow over the vast pool of tenor saxophone players who came before and after him. Among these was Joe Henderson, a member of Horace Silver's Song for My Father quintet, whose rich body of work, both as a sideman and lead, is marked by his "undiluted approach" to hard bop, post-bop, soul-jazz, and Latin jazz. From the early '70s through his death in 2001, the four-time Grammy winner lived in San Francisco, where he helped shape the annual SFJAZZ Festival. The SFJAZZ Collective will perform a series of shows dedicated to Henderson, featuring new arrangements of his tunes as well its own original compositions.
