Sentenced to Life

Wednesday, Nov 30 2011
If Black Friday is simultaneously the kickoff and the lowlight of the holiday season — and who would argue otherwise? — World AIDS Day is one of the highlights. Say what? Hear us out: One of the aims of the worldwide day of commemoration is to celebrate those living with HIV. And these days, thankfully, “living” means living a whole lot longer. (Ask Magic Johnson, who notched his 20th anniversary with the virus a few weeks ago.) The potential for inspiration is enormous, and sagas of strength are especially welcome heading into the high-stress holidays. Local producer-directors Marc Smolowitz and Jorg Fockele deliver 15 spirited, soulful presents in their recently completed omnibus film, Still Around. Bay Area filmmakers are disproportionately represented, as you might expect, with Rick Osmon (the autobiographical “Instant Dad”), Debra A. Wilson (the activist profile “Ward 86”) and Stuart Gaffney (the straight-family saga of “Elaine”) leading the way. Jean Carlomusto’s Sex In an Epidemic delivers a hearty helping of history and education as the bottom (or is it the top?) of the double bill.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
