Schoolboy Q: Show Preview

Wednesday, Feb 29 2012

Thematically speaking, there's nothing particularly fresh about Habits & Contradictions, the acclaimed second album from L.A. rapper Schoolboy Q: The 25-year-old deals with street hustling, his all-encompassing love of malt liquor and marijuana, and, of course, his physical encounters with members of the opposite sex. But pairing Quincy Hanley's versatile flow — smooth and charming on "Sex Drive," freakish and menacing on "There He Go" — with noirish atmospherics and occasionally brutal beats ("Raymond 1969" even samples Portishead) makes for a memorable document of the dark sounds of L.A. in 2012.

Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
