Sasha Waltz & Guests: Impromptus Recommended

When: Oct. 24-25, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $40-$96

Modernity and its Discontents

With the wheels of progress and destruction locked on a shared axis in an ever-accelerating spin, the alienation, exaggeration, and intense emotion of expressionism haven't been out of fashion for at least a hundred years. For those with a particular hankering after the hybrid manifestation of Tanztheater, don't miss the one opportunity to experience Berlin-based company Sasha Waltz & Guests on American soil in 2014. Choreographer Waltz brings a spare set: just seven dancers to dance to five of Franz Schubert's impromptus and four of his lieder, to be performed live by pianist Cristina Marton and mezzo-soprano Ruth Sandhoff. Longtime collaborator Thomas Schenk designs a set that features a gold parallelogram suspended above the stage, a pendulum for a multidimensional universe, the bright edge of a cage, a Euclidean memoir in elliptic and hyperbolic times — something to feel, not to calculate.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
