San Francisco music, much like the rest of the city, is changing — fast. Practice spaces have been renovated into swank new condos, venues closed down or threatened by noise ordinance laws, and bands sent scurrying across the bridge to escape skyrocketing rent.
Despite all this, the ever-enduring spirit of San Francisco, a city that has inspired musicians for generations, continues. In this special music issue we took on the task of capturing that spirit and bringing it to you here.
Truth is, the Bay Area's bustling music scene is too vast and vibrant to capture all at once, but hopefully within these pages you will walk down one or two streets you've never visited before. Perhaps you'll see a few familiar faces, but more importantly we hope you discover a couple new ones worth getting to know.
Over the next week we will be profiling a couple musicians a day on our music blog, All Shook Down. Take this collection of profiles as merely a jumpin-off point — a diner's sampler plate, if you will — to the Bay Area's always-changing musical landscape. From a 16-year-old jazz prodigy to a powerful rapper, an electroinic DJ to a mid-'60s inspired rock 'n' roll band and more, this glimpse of Bay Area music should encourage you to get out to a show and witness the defiant, enduring spirit of Bay Area musicians live.
