Boom-Boom Boomerang
Two weeks ago, Boomerang, Haight Street's only surviving live music venue, began running large ads that read "Despite the rumors, Club Boomerang will continue with live music. All shows that are booked will go on as scheduled. Bands with gigs should call ... to confirm their gigs." This was some time after bands who had been booked for the months of January and February were canceled by Michael James, then the club's booker. James, who had over the last year established a reputation for giving new bands a break, says that he was forced to cancel all future shows because owner Gina Lee refused to pay his salary for the month of December. "I wasn't going to get paid for the work that I had done," says James, "so I took my calendars and my Rolodex and canceled the shows." This left the Boomerang's new booking agent, ex-bar manager James Robert, without any band contacts or schedules for the next two months -- hence the ads' desperate call for musicians to contact the club. "The Boomerang has a history of poor staff relations," continues James. "Everything from refusing to pay overtime to refusing to pay bands."

Lee claims that James made off with $800 that was allotted for band payment. She also claims that James habitually abused his privileges, spending 335 minutes on long-distance calls to Chicago and taking monthlong vacations. She promises to take him to court, and James welcomes the opportunity. "Saying that I stole money is just absurd," says James. "As for the rest of it, I didn't have set business hours and I never took vacations -- except for four days during Christmas." James does admit that earlier this year he took a month off to go out of town on business, but that his assistant was in the office every day to take care of any problems that might have arisen. James has a countersuit in the works and, given the Boomerang's history of employee lawsuits, he has no doubt that "they are going to lose." Oh, to be a fly on the wall for that mudslinging match. ... Says Lori Perkovich of Right Arm Productions -- which books some 20 bands including the Screaming Bloody Marys, Ain't, Phantom Rockers, and Link 80 -- "None of my bands will ever play the Boomerang again. With Michael gone, I think that only brand-new bands would be willing to play that club." Musicians wanting to play the Boomerang should contact Robert at 387-2996. As for Michael James, his new blues booking agency, American Legends, is already up and running with offices in both San Francisco and Los Angeles. That was one productive month.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
