Some of us hate sports; it's part of why we like art. We became artsy types so we could get out of P.E. in 11th grade! But at
Open for Making: A Residency for Creativity, those sorts of BS dichotomies are mostly ignored. The general idea is a one-day artistic residency program, for anyone who's thinking about maybe creating some visual art. The catch is, you have to do sports. At the first of the four Saturday programs on Jan. 10, everyone played basketball. The reverse catch is, you're playing (or hiking, or some other thing that's helpful to do before a long day of thinking) with artists. Curator Joyce Grimm got basketball-obsessed U.C. Berkeley MFA-holder Kenneth Lo to facilitate the balling, for example, which was a genius move. Post-sports activities (each guided by artists) include relaxation techniques, small group discussions, and then a go with yarn and glue, camera and passersby, cupcakes and found footage, or whatever all that increased blood flow to the brain tells you to do.
Open for Making starts at noon.
