Some of us hate sports; it's part of why we like art. We became artsy types so we could get out of P.E. in 11th grade! But at Open for Making: A Residency for Creativity, those sorts of BS dichotomies are mostly ignored. The general idea is a one-day artistic residency program, for anyone who's thinking about maybe creating some visual art. The catch is, you have to do sports. At the first of the four Saturday programs on Jan. 10, everyone played basketball. The reverse catch is, you're playing (or hiking, or some other thing that's helpful to do before a long day of thinking) with artists. Curator Joyce Grimm got basketball-obsessed U.C. Berkeley MFA-holder Kenneth Lo to facilitate the balling, for example, which was a genius move. Post-sports activities (each guided by artists) include relaxation techniques, small group discussions, and then a go with yarn and glue, camera and passersby, cupcakes and found footage, or whatever all that increased blood flow to the brain tells you to do.

Open for Making starts at noon.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
