Before medical marijuana and streaming content, folks had to make do with crappy dime bags and whatever dreck the local TV station broadcast in the middle of the day. In our hazy memory, sitting around and cracking wise was pretty good, until we discovered Mystery Science Theater 3000. The cult sensation won a Peabody Award, inspired a multitude of MSTies, and spawned a cadre of imitators. Thankfully, in 2008, MST3K alumni Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett returned with RiffTrax to show everyone how it's done. These days, RiffTrax can easily raise enough cash to license big titles like Starship Troopers, but the halcyon days of low-rent titles and absurd instructional films proved laughter lies in the eye of the riffer. Little wonder, then, that Night of the Shorts 5: A Good Day to Riff Hard is RiffTrax's fifth program of shorts for SF Sketchfest. The core team is joined by frequent players Cole Stratton and Janet Varney, as well as guests John Hodgman (The Daily Show), Todd Barry (Louie), and Paul F. Tompkins (Best Week Ever).
