Hear This: Refused at GAMH

If your political leanings are to the right, you may not be able to truly appreciate Sweden's Refused and its style of punk. The quartet rose to great acclaim during the late '90s releasing three successive albums that ripped and teared at the core of the genre. But it wasn't until its magnificent 1998 opus, The Shape of Punk to Come, and following breakup, that practically everyone came into the know. It would take until 2012 for the band to reunite and another three years to release its fourth record, Freedom, due out in June on Epitaph Records. While the band was obviously influenced by the likes of Nation of Ulysses and Born Against — two great raucous punk and hardcore bands in their own right — only Refused has steadfastly rallied against the system and came back from the dead to find more hungry fans waiting.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
