REAL ASTROLOGY For an Unreal World

For All the Signs: Need an excuse to party? You couldn't find a better one than this week's supercharged cosmic event: the equinox. For this brief period, the sun appears to be balanced directly over the equator, and the light of day and the dark of night are equally long and strong.

Hundreds of years ago, many cultures regarded each equinox as a re-enactment of the sacred marriage between God and Goddess. These days, in an era when the materialistic metaphors of science have trumped all other metaphors, it's easy for many of us to smirk at our ancestors' quaint notions. Not me, though. Just as surely as I believe the universe began in a Big Bang, I expect God and Goddess to reconsecrate their love affair this week.

At this fulcrum of the year, all the oppositions in your life are dramatically highlighted: masculine in relation to feminine; responsibility posed against freedom; self-interest face to face with the demands of love; the urge to go to McDonald's vs. the pull toward Burger King.

It's possible you'll feel torn, as if your arms were tied to different horses galloping in opposite directions. On the other hand, you'll also have ripe opportunities to create harmony and balance where before there've been schisms and paradoxes. And here's the kicker: How you fare will not be dictated by the impersonal machinations of the stars. It'll depend mostly on your willingness to flourish in the midst of ambiguity. Have you embraced your contradictions today?

Exercise: Picture a certain aspect of your life that drives you crazy because it's simultaneously so good and so bad. Then find a way to feel gratitude for this predicament because of all it's teaching you about thriving on the edge between the dark and light, between never and forever.

Aries (March 21-April 19): Read the spiel at the top of the column, then return here for the rest of the story. Your assignment is to do your best to heal and reinvent your relationship with all the contradictions in your life, but especially this one: your headstrong and admirable obsession with being your unique, willful, pioneering self ... as opposed to the more difficult task of being sensitive toward those helpers who aren't as unique, willful, and pioneering.

Taurus (April 20-May 20): Read the spiel at the top of the column, then return here for the rest of the story. Your assignment is to do your best to heal and reinvent your relationship with all the contradictions in your life, but especially this one: your superhuman capacity for good hard work ... as opposed to the sensual delights and inspiring beauty that your workaholism sometimes distracts you from.

Gemini (May 21-June 20): Read the spiel at the top of the column, then return here for the rest of the story. Your assignment is to do your best to heal and reinvent your relationship with all the contradictions in your life, but especially this one: your knack for being popular and your talent for being the life of every party ... as opposed to your secret need to go off by yourself and discover how to express yourself in ways that are utterly immune to the expectations of other people.

Cancer (June 21-July 22): Read the spiel at the top of the column, then return here for the rest of the story. Your assignment is to do your best to heal and reinvent your relationship with all the contradictions in your life, but especially this one: your fervent ambition to make your indelible mark in this crazy, rude, fragmented world ... as opposed to your voracious need for privacy and sweetness and self-protectiveness.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22): Read the spiel at the top of the column, then return here for the rest of the story. Your assignment is to do your best to heal and reinvent your relationship with all the contradictions in your life, but especially this one: your drive to be worshiped as the glorious pinnacle of creation ... as opposed to the humble necessity of ensuring that all your devotees have what they need in order to keep adoring you in the style to which you've become accustomed.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Read the spiel at the top of the column, then return here for the rest of the story. Your assignment is to do your best to heal and reinvent your relationship with all the contradictions in your life, but especially this one: your skill at helping other people tap into their resources, and the rewards you get for doing so ... as opposed to the much harder work of detonating your own potential.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Read the spiel at the top of the column, then return here for the rest of the story. Your assignment is to do your best to heal and reinvent your relationship with all the contradictions in your life, but especially this one: your talent for sensing the moods and needs of other people, and the power it gives you to manipulate situations to serve the good of all ... as opposed to your talent for sensing the moods and needs of other people, and the power it gives you to manipulate situations to serve your own personal aims.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Read the spiel at the top of the column, then return here for the rest of the story. Your assignment is to do your best to heal and reinvent your relationship with all the contradictions in your life, but especially this one: your talent for turning every emotional exchange into a riveting miniseries (which ensures that you're never boring) ... as opposed to your need for less claustrophobic mysteries that require more breathing room.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Read the spiel at the top of the column, then return here for the rest of the story. Your assignment is to do your best to heal and reinvent your relationship with all the contradictions in your life, but especially this one: your lust to express yourself extravagantly and spontaneously ... as opposed to your need to be a trustworthy cog in a reliable network.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Read the spiel at the top of the column, then return here for the rest of the story. Your assignment is to do your best to heal and reinvent your relationship with all the contradictions in your life, but especially the one that pits your relationships against your ambitions. Whether you know it or not, your success in life depends on your ability to treat people with sensitive respect for their individuality. Yet in your laudable drive to serve the big picture and promote the goals of your organization, you sometimes devalue the personal needs of others.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Read the spiel at the top of the column, then return here for the rest of the story. Your assignment is to do your best to heal and reinvent your relationship with all the contradictions in your life, but especially this one: your talent for formulating soaring, visionary ideals ... as opposed to your pressing need to learn from the gritty stories that fall outside the scope of those ideals.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20): Read the spiel at the top of the column, then return here for the rest of the story. Your assignment is to do your best to heal and reinvent your relationship with all the contradictions in your life, but especially the disconnection between money and your imagination. Your prodigious ability to fantasize could be very useful in attracting more money into your life. But you subconsciously fear this would pollute you, and instead save your imaging powers for more "spiritual" or "artistic" or "romantic" activities. Please correct this imbalance.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
