Racing for Punks

Polish your axles, deburr your wheels, and keep your nose square. Keep it under 5 ounces, and be sure you've got 3/8ths of an inch clearance. At the Pinewood Derby and Art Auction, an annual benefit put on by the Hell's Belles Car Club, the builders and racers of wooden kit-cars have many regulations to keep in mind. The Belles also provide a “Show Car” category for those who can't follow any rules at all, but to enter the race and get your sanded wheels on that pretty, sloping track, you gotta toe the line. And they do: Describing the hordes of years past, Belle Jamie O'Keefe says everybody wants in. “You've got professional artists, and you've got 5-year-olds” who show up with decorated blocks of wood on wheels hoping for glory, she says. The art auction part of the event attracts car-related donations as well as professional fine art items, likely some that are both. Just remember: Lubricants may not foul the track.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
