Proper Parody

Wednesday, Oct 30 2013

Clearly, there is something special about Downton Abbey. The British period drama about the post-Edwardian era has won a Golden Globe, a Primetime Emmy award, and was even recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most critically acclaimed TV show of 2011. What drives our collective fascination with the show's aristocratic Crawley family? Could it be their soap opera-esque lives? Or perhaps it's the historic detail brought to each season? It's hard to say, but we're pretty sure the Lamplighters Music Theatre company has a few ideas, which they will bring to bear in Upside-Downton Abbey, their upcoming spoof of the show. The Lamplighters specialize in performing comic operas in the grand tradition of the Gilbert and Sullivan method. Their productions are often flamboyant, with intricate costumes, rousing musical numbers and well-thought-out period pieces. They're definitely the perfect group to lampoon the residents of Downton Abbey.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
