Now that the indie dance genre has transformed from trend to movement, outfits like the U.K.-based Simian Mobile Disco have broadened their followings across the hipster landscape. After breaking up their vaunted electro-rock band Simian, producers James Ford and Jas Shaw first stormed the dancefloor as traveling DJs, then proceeded to remix the whole damn scene, including biggies like Air, Björk, Klaxons, and the Rapture. Their 2007 debut, Attack Decay Sustain Release, established the duo as a true boogie force, and they've blazed the road with their thumpy live sets. Unlike superstar peers Justice, SMD brings a crisp, no-nonsense vibe to its hooky uptempo tunes. Judging by "Synthesise," the artful, jittery classic-house single from its upcoming album, SMD still have the disco on lockdown.
