Pirouetting After Midnight

Wednesday, Sep 28 2011
The spirited founder of the Smuin Ballet may have passed away in 2007, but the influence of Michael Smuin’s fierce movements live on — this time to the contralto crooning of Patsy Cline. The choreography in the main work, World Premiere, part of the company’s Fall/Winter Program, is the most “Smuin-esque” to date from Amy Seiwert, whose years with Smuin as mentor have shaped her into a riveting force during the company’s healing years. In the past the company has performed — to great acclaim — ballet works to popular music as disparate as the Shins and Frank Sinatra, so tonight a trip through the discography of the late Grand Ole Opry star is in good hands (and feet). The program includes a commemoration of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11; Smuin’s own Stabat Mater mourns, in heart-wrenching duets, the losses of that day set to the religious cantata of the same name by Antonín Dvorák — written in the wake of his daughter’s death. The choreography that premiered in 2002 has the same effect today as immediately after the attacks. A Rodin-based pas de deux, The Eternal Idol, and a boudoir brouhaha, Tango Palace — both resurrected Smuin works — round out the program.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
