Folk and country music have rich histories of story-songs celebrating and lamenting the endgames of outlaws, heroes, lovers, and losers. In our city by the bay, musical mutants Pine Box Boys maintain and extend that tradition. A foursome who perform on acoustic stringed instruments and drums, these Boys draw upon bluegrass, country, and rockabilly (especially the cheery Grand Guignol inspiration of the Cramps) for their maniacally humorous original tunes. Clean living types will likely recoil — the band's latest opus, Child of Calamity, includes a celebration of "Pukin' Blood, Spittin' Teeth, Bein' High." One way to defang an adversary is to laugh at (or with) it — the Pine Box Boys zing the Grim Reaper time and time again.
