"Passport": Japantown Recommended

When: Sun., Oct. 18 2015
Price: $25

Ticket to Ride

Anyone who is into artist trading cards knows the addictive pleasure of collecting tiny pieces of original art. While officially linked to the mail art movement in Switzerland, such diminutive works have circulated as titillation and one-upsmanship within modern art movements around the world. By inviting a handful of artists to create one-of-a-kind rubber stamps, and sending collectors out into the street to find them, “Passport” combines the beauty of ATC with the thrill of the treasure hunt and the gratification of a neighborhood party. This year’s tour takes travelers to Japantown, and promises a costume sketch from Jun Kaneko, the artist behind the SF Opera’s new production of The Magic Flute; as well as work by internationally known artists such as Kota Ezawa, Tina Takemoto, and Ruth Asawa. Between making photo stickers at Pika Pika and taking origami classes at Paper Tree, you might collect 16 works in your one-of-a-kind book. Allow two to three hours for the journey.

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
    Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
