Remember when you saw your first one? With her gold beehive, blue eyeshadow, and razor-wire wit? Women who waitress long-term in this country are special, and for many, they dish out a little bit of joy and a lot of style with the coffee warm-up. (We love their immortal moment in Thelma and Louise.) Photographer Candacy Taylor's exhibit, "Dishing It Out: Career Waitresses Across the U.S.A," turns the spotlight on these ladies in photographs and interviews five of her stars are from the Bay Area. Fashion and sass are only the most obvious things to admire about career waitresses, as the exhibit shows: The artist found that many of them drive new cars, own homes, send their kids to college, and enjoy their jobs. The subtext, directed at anyone who looks down on food servers: Kiss my grits.
