Bonding With Beckett

Bill Irwin feels deeply connected to the work of Samuel Beckett. The Tony-winning actor and former Pickle circus clown has appeared in several Beckett plays, including Waiting for Godot on Broadway, and Endgame at A.C.T. The vaudevillian and tragicomic qualities he brought to those performances proved superbly compatible with Beckett’s bleak, absurdist writing. (Who better than a clown to substantiate Beckett’s statement that “nothing is funnier than unhappiness,” a sentiment that figures big in Beckett’s work.) To honor Beckett’s contributions, and to share his love for the playwright, Irwin is returning to A.C.T. to perform On Beckett, a show containing Beckett-penned plays, prose, and poetry, along with some Beckett-related thoughts and a bit of soft-shoe shuffle. Beckett and Irwin enthusiasts and anyone else interested in this show should act fast — only two days of performances are scheduled.

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
