Bonding With Beckett
Bill Irwin feels deeply connected to the work of Samuel Beckett. The Tony-winning actor and former Pickle circus clown has appeared in several Beckett plays, including
Waiting for Godot on Broadway, and
Endgame at A.C.T. The vaudevillian and tragicomic qualities he brought to those performances proved superbly compatible with Beckett’s bleak, absurdist writing. (Who better than a clown to substantiate Beckett’s statement that “nothing is funnier than unhappiness,” a sentiment that figures big in Beckett’s work.) To honor Beckett’s contributions, and to share his love for the playwright, Irwin is returning to A.C.T. to perform
On Beckett, a show containing Beckett-penned plays, prose, and poetry, along with some Beckett-related thoughts and a bit of soft-shoe shuffle. Beckett and Irwin enthusiasts and anyone else interested in this show should act fast — only two days of performances are scheduled.
