The genre of Japanese pub cooking known as izakaya assumes diners will be at least partially inebriated, and Nombe - the name means "drunk guy" - serves up a selection of small plates with big, earthy flavors that should pierce the fog of even the most rollicking night out. Gil Payne and Mari Takahashi introduces a touch of contemporary Cali lightness in yakimono (grilled dishes) and agemono (fried dishes). The kitchen's execution doesn't always do the food justice, but Payne's sprawling sake list provides a measure of solace.
