Noir Noel

As the holiday cheer approaches the relentless level, there’s nothing like a dose of noir to counteract the goo. Noir City Xmas features a double bill of cynical, dark 1940s cinema and should reinforce one’s sensible lack of faith in humanity. The program opens with Max Ophuls’ The Reckless Moment, in which accidental homicide happens, and a shady stranger enters the picture, after a California homemaker decides to separate her daughter from the influences of a rotten boyfriend. Joan Bennett, Geraldine Brooks, and James Mason star in the plot-twisty suspense. Henry Hathaway’s Kiss of Death stars Victor Mature as a parolee who fears for his life after he helps the cops catch a psycho criminal (Richard Widmark) who, due to a D.A. bungle, goes free. The evening will also include an appearance by noir maven Eddie Muller, who will reveal the complete schedule of the upcoming Noir City 14 festival.

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
