This cool, glam, retro-dotcom nightspot serves up classy Japanese small plates and cutting-edge sushi, but what the place is really known for are its 400 varieties of single-malt scotch, the biggest selection on the Pacific Coast. That bottle of 50-year-old MacPhail's will set you back $4,000 or so, but for a smaller stipend you can settle for a skillfully concocted Rob Roy, sazerac, or other whisky-licious cocktail. Izakaya snacks like taro fries, hamachi-stuffed shiitake, and seaweed-wrapped Kobe burgers are pretty tasty too. There's a private red-plush hideaway upstairs for the more elite tipplers.

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
