In August Strindberg's 1901 surreal masterpiece A Dream Play, a young goddess is sent in a dreamlike state to Earth to witness the trials and tribulations of the human race. If you like to pretend that issues like materialism and social inequality don't exist, steer clear of this one. But if you're local playwright Katharine Sherman, these ideas serve as inspiration — as is evident in her new work, nightcap. In nightcap, traditional medieval dream imagery — think nymphs, adventurers, and a magical quest — interact simultaneously with an almost scientific dialogue about the patterns of sleep cycles. Presented as part of Cutting Ball Theater's ongoing RISK IS THIS program, nightcap takes a classical idea and adds experimental elements. And judging from its packed season of daring creations, Cutting Ball Theater isn't for the faint of heart.
Cutting Ball Theater presents nightcap at 1 p.m. at EXIT Theater, 277 Taylor St., S.F. $20 suggested donation; 415-525-1205 or cuttingball.com.
