New Year's Eve Guide 2011

Wednesday, Dec 15 2010

Science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke took two shots at predicting the future — first in 2001, then again this year — and missed both times. (No cosmic monoliths, no psychedelic superbabies, no nothing? WTF, Mr. CBE?) In 2012 the Mayan conspiracy theorists will have their own turn. But 2011 is all yours, people! You've got 12 months before Central American ziggurats heed their ancient call to take orbit and trigger the apocalypse, so consider this New Year's Eve your klaxon to action. From free DJ parties in neighborhood bars to pricy mega-ragers that require three lines of credit and a refinanced mortgage just to get in the door, there's an event for every cultural taste and income demographic. Hell, there's even a celebration themed after 1984 — Orwell's own infamously predicted year. Maybe your resolution for 2011 should be to avoid predicting anything and just roll with the punches. In the meantime, start stockpiling Excedrin and espresso for Jan. 1.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
