The Mission District is known for its superior weather, a plethora of taquerias, and the proliferation of V-necked hipsters, for starters. Its also rich with art and culture, so much that one can be overwhelmed to the point of complacency. Muralists have been cutting a swath of color across the neighborhood for decades, and yet its easy to cruise past an enormous, eye-popping piece of artwork without paying any attention, relegating it to the status of underappreciated backdrop. Thats where the talented tour guides of Precita Eyes new Sixteenth Street Mission Mural Tour come in. They lead you through the central Mission territory, which is teeming. Clarion Alley offers an explosion of modern pieces (think pixelated unicorns), which are updated and added to every year at the Clarion Alley Block Party. The Womens Building mural is so expansive an entire afternoon could be spent discovering new things within it. Also included in the tour are the KidPower Park mosaic mural, the Mission Pool mural, and everyones favorite sports-themed mural, Vamos Gigantes (Go Giants).
First Saturday of every month, 11 a.m. Starts: July 4. Continues through Dec. 5, 2009
