The Paramount Theatre in Oakland
A Sept. 3 engagement with Def, Badu, and Electronica at Davies Symphony Hall is sold out, but tickets are still available for Friday, Sept. 4, at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. 7:30 p.m., $39.50-$99.50; 510-465-6400 or www.paramounttheatre.com.
One of this country's most politically astute rappers, New York's Mos Def often calls out society's ills, but his latest album, The Ecstatic, brings out his most optimistic sounds for a new era of Obama hope. Dallas-based Erykah Badu, an old soul with futuristic beats, has a deep catalog of jams to pull from as she readies her next full-length, New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh). Jay Electronica, who had a daughter with Badu earlier this year, is the opening act on this bill. He'll offer teases of the unconventional from his debut album, which has no scheduled release date.
