Mercury Soul: Classical Meets Club Recommended

When: Fri., Oct. 2 2015
This exciting, hybrid music event merging classical music, live electronica and DJ sets returns to SF October 2nd with a show at Ruby Skye. Led by composer/DJ Mason Bates, Mercury Soul uses modern lighting & club production to re-imagine the classical music experience for a new audience in extraordinary spaces, from clubs to concert halls. Will feature some of San Francisco’s finest indie-classical musicians – Del Sol String Quartet, Thalea Quartet, and members of Elevate Ensemble – performing energetic classical masterworks by Stravinsky, Bach, Mendelssohn, Poulenc, Bates, and local composer Gabriela Lena Frank, tightly-integrated between sets by DJ Masonic (Mason Bates), Chicago’s DJ Justin Reed, and guest DJs from the popular local underground dance music collectives Housepitality and Vinyl Dreams.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
